One other important difference involves the conditions under
which major evolutionary change occurs. In the biotic world, most
major change happens when a population become reproductively isolated and
cannot exchange genetic information with other populations of its species.
In contrast, human societies that are isolated almost invariably experience
a low rate of cultural change. In short, isolation tends to have
opposite effects in the two modes of evolution (1991, p. 68).
